At Nursery Days, Pancake Day is a highlight of the year — a chance to celebrate Shrove Tuesday with creativity and curiosity. Historically, British families made pancakes to use up eggs and dairy before Lent, and we love sharing this little slice of history with our children.

Nursery Days Perfect Pancake Recipe

  • 100g plain flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 300ml milk

  • A little oil for the pan

Whisk the mixture until lump‑free, pour into a warm pan, cook until golden, flip carefully (grown‑ups only), and serve with fruit, yoghurt, or a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Topping Ideas for Creative Kids

A plate of warm pancakes becomes even more exciting when children can choose how to decorate them.

  • Fruit toppings such as bananas, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries add colour and natural sweetness.

  • Yoghurt gives a smooth, creamy finish.

  • Honey or maple syrup can be added sparingly for sweetness (not suitable for children under 1).

  • Nut butters offer a tasty protein boost.

  • Sprinkles add a fun, colourful touch.

  • Cinnamon and sugar bring a classic, comforting flavour.

Why Pancake Making Works So Well with Children

Cooking pancakes is a wonderful way to bring learning, bonding, and creativity together. It’s a lovely shared activity, giving adults and children time to connect, chat, and enjoy a joint project.

There’s plenty of maths practice hidden in the fun — measuring ingredients, counting spoonfuls, talking about shapes, and timing how long each pancake cooks.

Pancake making encourages language and decision‑making, too. Children can choose toppings, describe flavours, talk about colours, and explain their choices.

It’s also a great opportunity to invite others to join in. Sharing pancakes with friends, siblings, or grandparents turns the activity into a warm, social celebration.

The activity also supports:

  • Fine Motor Skills through stirring, pouring, and decorating.

  • Language Skills as children learn new cooking vocabulary.

  • Social Skills through sharing, turn‑taking, and teamwork.

Safety Matters

We supervise closely, keep all hot equipment away from children, and encourage safe handwashing and hygiene. Adults handle the cooking while children enjoy the creative parts.
