Meal Times

Healthy Food Policy

Appetites can be big even with little people. To satisfy all appetites we have our own widely experienced cook who will prepare varied and well-balanced nutritional meals in our kitchen area.

Meals are chosen to reflect the cultural and religious backgrounds of the children.  Parents wishes are respected.  Meals and snacks are regarded as social occasions with staff eating with small groups of children.

  • We provide breakfast of cereal, toast, a piece of fruit and milk before 8.45am.
  • A mid morning snack of fruit with milk or water.
  • A hot lunch at 12.00 followed by a pudding with water.
  • A mid afternoon snack of fruit with milk or water.
  • Tea at 4pm with water.

Our menu has been carefully developed and agreed with parents, which works on a five-week rotation available to view on the notice board near the kitchen.  Our recipes provide all children with a tasty, varied diet.

Children will still receive dessert if they refuse their main course.  Parents/guardians will be advised if their child is not eating well.  Water will be available at all times.

Parents/guardians of children who are on special diets will be asked to provide as much information as possible about suitable foods and, in some cases, may be asked to provide the food themselves.

Carers will sit with children while they eat and will provide a good role model for healthy eating.  Withholding food will not be used as a form of punishment.  Children will be encouraged to develop good eating skills and table manners and will be given plenty of time to eat.

Advice will be given to parents about suitable foods to bring from home.

Children will be encouraged to play outside every day, weather permitting, as sunshine helps their bodies to make vitamin D.

Parents to help celebrate birthdays and other celebrations, which will be eaten straight after a mealtime, may provide treats such as sweets or cake. Balloons and bubbles are also welcomed as an alternative to cakes and sweets.

Babies Under 1
We ask parents to provide formula milk or expressed milk and any weaning foods until your baby is of an age to enjoy our recipes.  All foods will be carefully prepared for your baby.

All menus are displayed on the kitchen notice area.

Cooks Comments

"Fresh fruit, meat and vegetables and home baking is a very important factor on my menus. I have introduced freshly made bread and pizzas to the lunch and tea menus.

We have recently been awarded the 'Clean Food Award' from Swale Borough Council and have been put forward to participate in the Healthy Eating Award, which we hope to achieve in the near future.

My main aim is to provide a healthy, varied and balanced diet, which contains very little, if any processed food. Also to provide meals that children like and enjoy, which I am confident the majority does. The meals that I serve are well presented with different colours and flavours to make food fun and inviting.

My menus are carefully planned over a 5 week rotating basis (winter and summer dishes are added).

I am always available to discuss any concerns or ideas and suggestions for new dishes.

Thank you."
